Year 1, 2017-2018
THE BEGINNING December 27, 2017, temperatures are a low of -8 and a high of 5. Father Rick Swanson of Saint John’s-in-the-Mountains of Stowe says “enough is enough”! He opens his church doors to any and all Vermonters who are in need of shelter from the cold.During the months of January and February, the interfaith community responded by co-hosting the traveling shelter: United Church of Johnson, the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe, and the Second Congregational Church in Hyde Park gathered volunteers and opened their doors and hearts to serve this at-risk community in Lamoille Valley. Our interfaith and lay communities mobilized over 150 volunteers to provide meals, launder sheets and blankets, donate much needed items, staff shifts, as well as administer behind-the-scenes operations. On March 1, 2018, in partnership with Lamoille County Sheriff Roger Marcoux, our shelter found a consistent and long-term home in Hyde Park village. |
